TOP TIPS FOR IMPROVING FUEL EFFIENCY
Finding ways to reduce driving costs has never been more important. While you can’t control the price at the bowser, you can improve how efficiently your vehicle uses fuel with a few simple habits.
1
Check your tyre pressure regularly
Correctly inflated tyres reduce rolling resistance and can lower fuel consumption by around 2%, while also extending tyre life. Always follow the pressure listed on your vehicle’s tyre placard and don’t forget to check your spare.
2
Reduce unnecessary weight
Carrying extra items in your vehicle increases fuel use, especially in stop-start driving. Remove tools, sports gear or luggage you don’t need — a heavily loaded vehicle can use significantly more fuel.
3
Remove roof racks when not in use
Roof racks and accessories increase aerodynamic drag and can raise fuel consumption by up to 5%.
4
Keep your car well maintained
Regular servicing, clean air filters and a healthy engine help your car run more efficiently and use less fuel over time.
5
Drive smoothly and steadily
Gentle acceleration, steady speeds and anticipating traffic reduce fuel use and vehicle wear. Sudden braking and rapid acceleration burn more fuel.
6
Limit idling and watch your speed
Turn off the engine if stopped for more than a few minutes (when off the road). Driving at lower, consistent speeds is generally more fuel efficient than driving fast.
Small changes in how you drive and maintain your vehicle can add up to real savings at the pump.
