The UNIMIG Thoriated Tungsten Electrode 3.2mm 10 Pack PTR0004-32 is a 2% thoriated TIG tungsten electrode set for DC welding, classified as EWTh-2 under AWS and ISO standards.
Each electrode contains a minimum of 97.3 per cent tungsten and 1.7 to 2.2 per cent thorium, a composition commonly described as 2 per cent thoriated tungsten. This is the most widely used tungsten type in TIG welding, valued for its stable ARC starts, extended lifespan and resistance to tungsten spitting that can otherwise contaminate a weld. The electrode operates below its melting point and holds a sharpened point well during use.
Thorium is a low-level radioactive material, though when it is enclosed within the tungsten matrix as in these electrodes the associated risk is negligible, and thoriated tungsten should not contact open cuts or wounds. The more significant risk to welders arises from thorium oxide entering the lungs, which can occur through exposure to welding vapours or from dust generated when grinding the tungsten.
