The UNIMIG Thoriated Tungsten Electrode 2.4mm 10 Pack PTR0004-24 is a 2% thoriated tungsten electrode (AWS classification EWTh-2) for TIG welding on DC power. Each electrode contains a minimum of 97.3% tungsten and 1.7% to 2.2% thorium, giving it the long service life and reliable ARC starts that have made it the most widely used electrode type. Operating below its melting point extends tip life, and the electrode resists tungsten spitting while holding a sharpened point through use.
Thoriated tungsten carries a low-level radioactive hazard from the thorium content. Thorium is an alpha emitter, and enclosing it in the tungsten matrix keeps the risk negligible during normal handling, though contact with open cuts or wounds should be avoided. The more significant risk to welders comes from inhaling thorium oxide, which can occur through vapours generated during welding or dust created when grinding the tungsten.
