The primary function is to ensure the engine maintains an optimal operating temperature by controlling the flow of coolant as the engine heats up. When the engine is cold, the thermostat remains closed to allow the engine to warm up quickly. Once the engine reaches its ideal temperature, the thermostat opens, enabling coolant to circulate and prevent overheating. The thermostat housing also serves as a connection point for coolant hoses and may include sensors to monitor temperature.
