Is this product for you?
Find yourself out on solo adventures from time to time? Although some experienced 4WD owners have a single front-mounted winch, unless you have one fitted to the rear as well, you may find yourself stuck. That’s where this Ridge Ryder 4WD Recovery Hand Winch can be seriously helpful, and is significantly cheaper than fitting a dedicated rear mounted winch.
How easy is it to use?
There’s no two ways about it, hand winching any vehicle is tough work, but this Ridge Ryder hand winch does make significant advances in the technology. With a simple clamping system, this hand winch is relatively easy to setup, and with the help of a winch dampener and the provided gloves it’s also one of the safest hand winches on the market. To use the winch, simply disengage the locking mechanism from the top, and thread the winch cable through the system. Then lock down the clamp, attach the cable to the vehicle you need to recover, and attach a tree trunk protector or similar on the other side. Then, all you need to do is ratchet the winch lever until the vehicle becomes free to drive away.
Where can you use it?
Whilst most 4WD enthusiasts do have a front mounted electric winch, this hand winch gives the user a great deal more flexibility with vehicle recovery. Unlike a vehicle mounted electric winch, when attached to correctly placed recovery points on a vehicle, this hand winch can be used to pull a vehicle backwards out of a bog, or even sideways to shift the load in a rut. This flexibility allows the user to recover a vehicle when even Maxtrax, Treds or a high lift jack don’t offer any joy. This particular winch offers a maximum pulling capacity of 1600kg, enough for most light 4WDs, and 20 meters of cable, allowing recovery even when you are a respectable distance from the nearest tree line.
And don't forget, when doing any work with winches, a winch dampener is something that really shouldn’t be overlooked.
