5 Great Camp Lighting Solutions
Gone are the days when we had to rely on the light of the fire, or a fragile gas lantern around camp. New LED lighting options bring us a range of choices for all kinds of camp lights and setups.
Lanterns
The lantern format has been around forever and there must be good reason for that! A lantern is perfect to light the communal camp area. It can be positioned away from the vehicle or tent and throws a 360 degree spread of light. As they don’t get hot, LED lanterns use plastic lenses rather than glass so it won’t shatter into dangerous pieces. You can choose between rechargeable or replaceable battery lanterns, as you prefer.
Work Lights
LED work lights may be designed for working on the car, but they actually do a pretty good job lighting up the campsite as well! These often have magnetic backs and bases, great for sticking to a vehicle or camper, or hanging from a gazebo, awning, or tree. With a spread of light between about 120 and 180 degrees, you’ll get good light coverage and intensity over the area.
Head Torches
No longer do you have to be a miner with a waist-mounted battery to have use for a head torch! It’s easy to choose the best LED headlight. They’re a great personal lighting option, and hands-free! Awesome for fiddly tasks in the dark. Features include either replaceable or rechargeable batteries, multiple brightness settings, red LED mode to preserve night vision, even motion sensors for total hands-free use.
Hand Torches
They may not have the convenience of hands-free, but a hand torch can be designed larger for longer battery life and higher light output. A hand torch might be a pinpoint directional spotlight which is awesome for wildlife spotting; or wide beam for general night time exploring. Some even have multi-focal lenses - so you can get the best of both worlds.
LED Strip Lights
If you have a vehicle battery or portable 12 volt power pack, LED light strips are a must have. These can be purchased as hard-backed or flexible, with adhesive backing for more permanent installations; or on a roll up to 5 metres long that can be strung around camp or under a gazebo. With 12 volt power and a car battery to power it; an LED light strip will run for many nights without a recharge, and throw an impressive amount of light.
No single LED light will suit everyone's camping style, so it’s important to think about how you camp and select a couple of lights to cover your bases.
