Mature DriverTips for mature-age drivers

Even though mature age drivers possess vast driving experience, there are a few courses of nature which may inhibit driving ability. It is important to be proactive in the prevention and treatment of such health conditions. Age-related changes may impact on vision, movement and the processing of information; the most common changes being hearing and sight.

Try to capture the early warning signs before they become a problem which will impact on your driving. See your family doctor for suggestions to manage or treat the condition. Alternatively, make an appointment with a specialist for your condition for specific suggestions. For example, your optometrist may suggest a few eye exercises specific for your condition to prevent sight problems or in conjunction with other treatment.

Make sure you always comply with conditions on your driver’s licence. Failure to comply may result in a fine or worse. Update your relevant conditions on your licence as soon as possible to ensure not only your safety on the roads, but also passengers, cyclists, other drivers and pedestrians.

If you are over the age of 75, you may be required to carry a medical certificate in the car with you every time you drive. Please check with your relevant transport authority for further details.

Driving while fatigued is extremely dangerous. Make sure you are well rested before a long trip and schedule rest stops along the way. A breath of fresh air, a walk or a cup of tea can make all the difference.
