Super holiday safety checklist

Super Cheap Auto DIY Holiday Road Travel Checklist

Before you set off…

  • Plan two-hourly stops if traveling long distance
  • Allow extra time for delays/traffic
  • Thoroughly check your vehicle using the following checklist:
  • Make sure all lights are working
  • Check fan belt condition and tension
  • Check break and clutch fluid levels
  • Check cooling system and hoses
  • Check oil levels and check for leaks
  • Ensure tyres, including spare tyre, are properly inflated

For campers:

  • Check tide times if driving along the beach
  • Ensure tyres are deflated to the correct pressure levels for sand driving
  • Ensure someone at home knows your camping schedule and destination
  • Make sure you have a high powered lighting source
  • Pack a winch or 4WD snatch strap
  • Pack a first aid kit
  • Ensure you always have at least five litres of water containers filled, per person, per day.

If towing a trailer, boat or caravan:

  • Make sure the vehicle is suited to the trailer
  • Make sure the load is evenly distributed and does not exceed the vehicles weight specification.
  • Ensure fittings, couplings and chains are fastened properly
  • Make sure number plates aren’t obscured

Hitting the road…

  • Share the driving if possible
  • Take 15 minute breaks every two hours
  • Ensure all passengers’ seatbelts are fastened and positioned correctly
  • Be aware of any strange noises or smells coming from the car

Homeward bound…

  • Ensure tyre pressure is reset to road driving levels
  • Be aware of school zone signs as some schools may have resumed
  • If returning from beach driving, thoroughly wash beneath your vehicle
